Question

In the figure, calculate:

(a) the total resistance of the circuit,

(b) the value of R, and

(c) the current flowing in R.

Open in App
Solution

(a) We know, V = IR

R equals V over I equals fraction numerator 4 over denominator 0.4 end fraction equals 10 space o h m

Total resistance, R = 10 ohm

(b) Resistors are in parallel.

1 over 10 equals 1 over R plus 1 over 20 1 over R equals 1 over 20 R equals 20 space o h m

(c) We know that,

V = IR

Potential (V) is equal at the two ends.

Let, I1 be the current flowing through R and I2 be through 20 ohm.

I1 + I2 = 0.4

I2=(0.4-I1)

Now, we have V=V

That is,

I1R1 = I2R2

I1 x 20= (0.4-I1) x 20

20 I1 = 8 – 20I1

40I1=8

straight I subscript 1 equals 8 over 40 equals 0.2
Therefore,

Current flowing through R = 0.2 A
