In the figure given below, a glass tumbler is filled with water and the water level is marked with a red marker. In fig -2, marbles are put in the glass tumbler and the water level is noted. Finally, in fig -3, the marbles are removed and the level of water is noted again. These three markings are then compared. It is found that the glass tumbler with marbles has a higher level of water. This experiment proves that matter occupies space.

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. In the given experiment, water is at a certain level initially but has a higher level when marbles are placed in it. After removing the marbles, water falls to its initial level. This shows that increase in water level is because of the marbles present. Marble is matter and therefore it occupies space.
