The zero error is positive zero error when the jaws are brought in contact, the zero of vernier scale must be right to the zero of main scale. Thus, the left image will give positive zero error.

The zero error is negative zero error when the jaws are brought in contact, the zero of vernier scale must be left to the zero of main scale. Thus, the right image will give the negative zero error.
