Calculate the ratio of the total distance travelled to the total displacement of the body if the curves GA and BC have the same radius, and all the lengths given are in feet.

Given figure:

The distance travelled from G to D, d=GA+AB+BC+CD
The curves GA and BC are quarter sections of a circle of radius 50 ft.
Their length = 14×2π×50
GA=BC=25π ft
Also, AB=DF5050=400100
AB=300 ft
CD=GF=300 ft
d=(2×25π)+(2×300)
d=(50π+600) ft
=50π+600=50(227)+600
=53007 ft......(i)
The displacement from G to D is GD.
Using Pythagoras theorem, GD=(GF)2+(FD)2
GD=(300)2+(400)2
GD=500 ft......(ii)

distancedisplacement=53007500=53003500=5335
