The signal wave gets distorted if there is any impedance mismatch between the characteristic impedance $Z_{0}$ and the transmitting impedance $Z_{T}$ and $Z_{0}$ and receiving impedance $Z_{R}$

i.e. $Z_{T} \neq Z_{0} a n d Z_{R} \neq Z_{0}$

then only distortion occurs.

As standing waveforms the signal has multi harmonics and hence distortion occurs.
