Question

In the following question a statement of Assertion (A) followed by a statement of Reason (R) is given. Choose the correct option out of the choices given below.

Assertion(A): Though the central atom of both NH3 and H2O molecules are sp3 hybridised, yet HNH bond angle is greater than that of HOH.

Reason(R): This is because the nitrogen atom has one lone pair and oxygen atom has two lone pairs.

A

Solution

The correct option is C

A and R both are correct, and R is the correct explanation of A.

Analyzing assertion and reason

  • The central atom N in the NH3 molecule is surrounded by 4 electron pairs (3 bond pairs +11 lone pair). The hybridisation of the central atom is sp3.
  • The central atom O in the H2O molecule is surrounded by 4 electron pairs (2 bond pairs +2 lone pairs). The hybridisation of the central atom is sp3.

  • But, the HNH bond angle in NH3 molecule is greater than the HOH bond angle in H2O molecule because lone pair-lone pair repulsion in H2O molecule is greater than the lone pair-bond pair repulsion in NH3 molecule which reduces the bond angle in water molecule
