Analysing the assertion

Rain water has a pH of 5.6 due to the presence ofH+ ions formed by the reaction of rain water with carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere. When the pH of the rain water drops below 5.6, it is called acid rain. Hence, the given assertion is the correct statement.

Analysing the reason


The below reaction is involved in the formation of carbonic acid: H2O(l)+CO2(g)H2CO3(aq)

H2CO3(aq)H+(aq)+HCO3(aq)

Hence, reason is also correct but not correct explanation for assertion.

Hence, from the above analysis it is concluded that option (B) is the correct one i.e., both A and R are correct but R is not the correct explanation of A.
