Assertion (A) Liquids tend to have the maximum number of molecules at their surface.

Reason (R) Small liquid drops have spherical shape.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

(b) Both A and R are true but R is the correct explanation of A

(c) A is true but R is false

Solution

Answer: (d) A is false but R is true

The assertion is false but the reason is true.

Liquid tends to acquire a minimum surface area due to surface tension. Thus, small liquid drops are spherical. In spherical shape, the surface area is minimum, that's why small liquid drops have the spherical shape.
