The inappropriate and excessive immune response of a person to some foreign substances is called allergy. Dust mites, pollen, animal dander etc. are some of the common allergens that induce allergy.
There are various reasons for allergies. Allergies tend to run in families, suggesting that they have a genetic basis.
Modern-day life style has resulted in lowering the immunity and more sensitivity to allergens. More and more children in metro cities of India suffer from allergies. It is due to the protected environment provided during early childhood.
For example: A kid who has moved from city to village for a vacation may show allergic symptoms when he touches hay (which is usually harmless).
In villages, children are usually exposed to a wide range of different bacteria, pollens, and animal dander and due to this immune system is able to distinguish harmful substances from the harmless.
