In the food chain given below, if the amount of energy available at fourth trophic level is 5 kJ, what was the energy available at the producer level?
Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Hawk
According to the ten percent law, only 10% of the energy is available to the organism in the succeeding trophic level.
If, 5 kJ energy is available at the 4th level (snake), the amount of energy at the previous level will be 10 times more, i.e., 50 kJ.
So, tracing back, we get that the grasshopper (2nd level) has 500 kJ of energy and at the producer level, i.e., grass, 5000 kJ of energy will be available.
