34 sq.units


In the first figure, The square is of the side = 1 cm + 4 cm = 5 cm

Area of the first square = 5×5=25 sq.units

It is cut and rearranged to get a bigger square as shown in the second figure with a square hole in the middle.

The side of the square hole in the middle = 3 cm

The area of the square hole in the middle = 3×3=9 sq.units

The area of the bigger square = area of the 1st square + area of the square hole in the middle

The area of the bigger square = 25 sq.units + 9 sq.units = 34 sq.units
