Question

In the laboratory preparation of hydrochloric acid, hydrogen chloride gas is dissolved in water.
(iii) Write balanced chemical equations for the laboratory preparation of HCl gas when the reaction is :
A. Below 200C
B. Above 200C

Open in App
Solution

Balanced chemical equations for the laboratory preparation of HCl gas:
(A) Below 200C
NaCl+H2SO4below 200CNaHSO4+HCl

(B) Above 200C
2NaCl+H2SO4above 200CNa2SO4+2HCl

At temperatures greater than 200C sodium sulphate is formed which forms a hard crust which sticks to the glass surface and is difficult to remove.
