Mendeleev arranged the then known sixty three elements in horizontal rows and vertical columns and gave his periodic table. He found that the chemical and physical properties of an element repeat after a regular interval when arranged on the basis of increasing atomic masses. All the elements with similar chemical properties ended up in the same column which he named as groups.
