Question

In the middle of a rectangular field measuring 30m×20m, a well of 7m diameter and 10m depth is dug. The earth so removed is evenlyspread over the remaining part of the field. Find the height through which the level of the field is raised.

Solution

Diameter of wall = 7m
Radius (r) = 72 m
Depth (h) = 10 m.
Volume of earth dug out = πr2h
= 227×72×72×10m3=385m3
Area of field = l×b=30×20=600m2
Area of well = πr2=227×72×72=772m2
= 38.5 m2
Reamining area of the field = 600 - 38.5
= 561.5 m2
Height of level raised = Volume of earthArea of field
= 385561.5=385×105615m
= 0.6856 m = 68.6 cm
