Solution

Dear Student,

In the plants with variegated leaves, only the green portion have chlorophyll and is able to prepare their own food by photosynthesis. The white portions of the leaves do not have chlorophyll, hence can not prepare their own food. These white portions are dependent on the food prepared by the green patches. They absorb the food from green portions in an organized manner and remains fresh and alive.
