During anaerobic respiration, the partial breakdown of glucose which is a 6 carbon sugar; takes place and it gets converted to a 3 carbon compound called lactic acid.
The following reaction takes place in the muscle cells of humans, in fungi and bacteria where the oxygen is low and is known as the lactic acid fermentation.

C₆H₁₂O₆ --------------------> 2C₃H₆O₃

In lactic acid fermentation, the pyruvate that is released after the glycolysis is converted directly into lactate by homolactic fermentation.
