ARTISTE means a person skilled in technical arts like singing, dancing and acting.
ARTIST is a person skilled in fine arts like painting.
In the given sentences:
Sentence 1 states that painter is an ARTISTE - This is incorrect because a painter is skilled in fine arts and not technical arts. The correct word will be ARTIST.
