$2 a b - 2 b^{2}$
Let $(a - b)^{2} + x = a^{2} - b^{2}$
$\Rightarrow a^{2} + b^{2} - 2 a b + x = a^{2} - b^{2} [∵ (a - b)^{2} = a^{2} + b^{2} - 2 a b] \Rightarrow x = a^{2} - b^{2} - (a^{2} + b^{2} - 2 a b) = a^{2} - b^{2} - a^{2} - b^{2} + 2 a b = 2 a b - 2 b^{2}$
