Reaction conditions

Some reactions does not proceed optimally in standard conditions. This is because of the high activation energy of the reactions. For these reactions, the physical constants like temperature, pressure and solvent are varied such that the reaction is carried out spontaneously. For endothermic reactions, the increase in temperature of the system increases the reaction rate. Catalysts are also added in some reactions which introduce an alternate reaction pathway with lower activation energy. A catalyst does not take part in a reaction and remains unaffected throughout the reaction.

In the given equation for the decomposition of Potassium chlorate (KClO3), the symbol Δ signify the heat supplied to the system by increasing the temperature. Therefore, the decomposition of potassium chlorate is an endothermic reaction.

From the equation, it can be seen that Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is unaffected during the reaction. Therefore, it is the reaction catalyst.
