In the stomach, gastric acid (HCl) is secreted by the parietal or oxyntic cells. These cells are located in the gastric glands found in the lining of the fundus and in the cardia of the stomach.

Gastrin secreting cells are the neuroendocrine cells present in the stomach. It facilitates gastric motility.

Parietal cells are responsible for the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Gastric acid is responsible for reducing the pH in the stomach to about 1.5 - 2.5. This secretion is important for the activity of gastric enzymes in the presence of an acidic pH. It is also important for destroying any form of pathogen that comes with the food.

Peptic cells secrete the proenzyme pepsinogen. The pepsinogen gets activated in the presence of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, forming the active pepsin.

This pepsin acts on the dietary proteins and digests them into smaller peptides.

There are no acidic cells in the stomach.
