Solution

Double displacement reaction

  • It is a chemical reaction in which two compounds in their aqueous solutions react to form two new compounds by the mutual exchange of their radicals.
  • In general double decomposition reaction can be represented as
  • AB+CDAD+BC
  • For example when barium chloride (BaCl2) reacts with sulphuric acid(H2SO4), they undergo mutual exchange of their radicals resulting in the formation of barium sulphate(BaSO4) and hydrochloric acid(HCl).
  • BaCl2(aq)bariumchloride+H2SO4(aq)sulphuricacidBaSO4(s)bariumsulphate+2HCl(aq)hydrochloricacid

Therefore, in the type of reaction in which two compounds exchange their positive and negative radicals called double displacement reaction.
