here AE is altitude,

So, As per Pythagorean Theorem,

$A{D}^2=A{E}^2+E{D}^2$...........eq1

& $AB2=A{E}^2+E{B}^2$

$A{B}^2=A{E}^2+(ED+DB{)}^2$........Eq2

So, As per eq1 & eq2 , it is clearly seen that

$AB>AD$

and any line starting from A inside the triangle ABC, on the base BC will be smaller then longest side.
