Question

In weak alkaline medium KMnO4 converted in to?

Open in App
Solution

  1. KMnO4 Reduction in acidicmedium:

MnO4(-) + 5e(-)+ 8H+ —————> Mn(2+) + 4H2O

2. KMnO4 Reduction In basic medium:

MnO4(-) + e(-) ————> MnO4(2-)

3. KMnO4 in Reduction in Neutral or Weakly Alkaline Medium:

MnO4- + 4 H+ + 3 e- ————> MnO2 + 2H2O

This Happens as oxidation character order for KMnO4 is Acidic > Neutral > Basic.

Reason for Oxidation character of KMnO4 -The acidic solution for this reaction consumes more H+ ions, implying that a lower pH favors this reaction.

Also Because in acidic medium, KMnO4 is much stronger oxidising agent than in neutral and basic medium. It is apparent from the fact that +7 state converts to +2 in acidic medium, +4 in neutral medium and +6 in basic medium.
