Question

In what ratio does the xaxis divide the line segment joining the points (4,6) and (1,7)
Also, find the coordinates of the point of division.

Solution

Using the section formula, if a point (x,y) divides the line joining the points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) in the ratio m:n, then
(x,y)=(mx2+nx1m+n,my2+ny1m+n)
Let coordinates of that point be p(α,0) and it divides AB in the ratio k:1
By section formula, y-coordinate of p.

0=7k6k+1

k=67

APPB=67

and x-coordinate,

α=4kk+1=46767+1=3413

P(3413,0).
