Question

In what ratio is the line segment joining (3,2) and (1,3) divided by the line xy=5?

Open in App
Solution

The given line is xy=5 ..........(1)

Let the line (1) divide the line segment joining the point (3,2) and (1,3) at the point P in the ratio k:1 then the co-ordinates of point P are
(k3k+1,3k2k+1)

Since P lies on (1), we get k3k+13k2k+1=5

k33k+2=5k+5

2k1=5k+5

7k=6

k=67

Hence, the required ratio is 6:7 externally.
