Under the Mughal rule that started with Babur, the tradition of hand painted and written autobiographies was introduced in India:
  • Babur wrote his own autobiography in the Turkish tradition by the name of Tuzuk-e- Babar in the Turkish language.
  • Humayun’s sister also took forward the culture of biographies and wrote the Humayun nama, while Jehangir wrote Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri.
  • Both Hindi and Urdu grew in prominence as languages of literary importance. Some of the important urdu poets of the time were Mir dard, Mir Taqi Mir and Galib.
  • Akbar also contributed immensely to the literary traditions. He set up a translation department to help translate great Sanskrit literary works such as the Mahabharat, Gita and others into Persian.
  • Tulsidas, Surdas and Rahim wrote famous literary works of the time.
