Question

In which biochemical form does the photosynthate move in phloem tissue?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthate:

It is the food or substance prepared by the process of photosynthesis.

Phloem tissue:

Phloem is a vascular tissue of the plant which functions mainly in the transportation of the photosynthate.

Transportation of photosynthate:

  1. The photosynthate that passes through the phloem tissue is sucrose.
  2. Glucose is the actual product of photosynthesis but since it is way more reactive thus, it is transformed into sucrose before its transportation.
  3. Thus, the biochemical form in which the photosynthate is transported in the phloem tissue is sucrose.
