Question

In which type of blood vessels is blood pressure the lowest?

Solution

Blood vessels:

The closed type of circulatory system constitutes three types of blood vessels-

  1. Arteries - carry oxygenated blood
  2. Veins - carry deoxygenated blood
  3. Capillaries - connecting link between arteries and veins.

Anatomy of arteries and veins:

Normally there are three layers found in the walls of blood vessels-

  1. Tunica externa: -
    1. It is the outermost layer of the.
    2. It is formed of loose connective tissue consisting of collagen fibres, elastin fibres, and longitudinal muscles.
  2. Tunica media: -
    1. It is a thick layer of circular non-striated muscles and a network of elastin fibres.
    2. It is thick in arteries as compared to veins.
  3. Tunica interna: -
    1. This layer is made up of squamous epithelium.
    2. This layer can also be termed the endothelium.

Blood pressure:

  1. The pressure of circulating blood against the walls of blood vessels.
  2. It is measured in 2 figures- systolic (when the heart pushes blood out) and diastolic (when your heart rests between beats).
  3. The unit of measurement is mmHg.
  4. An ideal range of blood pressure is 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.
  5. This notation signifies Systolic pressure/diastolic pressure mmHg.
  6. Blood pressure is highest within arteries like the aorta as they are directly connected to the ventricle.
  7. The thick walls of arteries contribute to withstanding high pressure
  8. Blood pressure in veins is low due to their structure and flow of blood against gravity.
