In which direction does a freely suspended magnet align?
North - south
The shape of the Earth's magnetic field resembles that of a bar magnet buried at its center. Earth's north pole is near the geographical south pole and earth's south pole is near the geographical north pole. The north pole of the earth attracts the south pole of the magnet and vice versa as opposite poles attract each other. So, freely suspended magnet always aligns in the North-South direction.
