Question

In which direction does current flow in an electric circuit?

Open in App
Solution

Current: It is defined as the rate of flow of electric charge through the cross-section of the conductor in unit time.

  1. It is denoted by I. The SI unit of current is ampere (A).
  2. The direction of an electric current is the direction of motion of positive charge conventionally.
  3. Thus, the current in the external circuit is directed away from the positive terminal and toward the negative terminal of the battery.

Hence, the direction of an electric current is taken as opposite to the direction of the flow of electrons.
