Question

In which direction does the electric potential decreases in an uniformly electrostatic field?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
The electric potential decreases in the direction of the electric field.

Consider a positive charge placed at the origin. Here the direction of electric field will be outwards.
Now, try to bring another positive charge to the origin (here direction is opposite to E)
It will be difficult to get closer and more work should be done.
Work = charge x potential difference.

Hence as we go against the direction of electric field the potential increases.

If we move the second charge away from origin ,( in the direction of E field) ,repulsion decreases and less work is to be done.

Hence electric potential decreases in the direction of the electric field.

Regards..
