Etonogestrel is an alternate form of the hormone progesterone which is used as a hormonal formulation in the implants. Implants are matchstick sized rods of plastic or any other inert material which are inserted under the skin of the inner arm above the elbow by trained nurses or doctors. This is also called a subdermal implant.
Etonogestrel is not administered in the form of oral pills, injection shots or adhesive patches. The oral pills designed for females have small doses of progestogen or a combination of progestogen-estrogen. Injections, and adhesive patches have a combination of progestogen- estrogen.
