Mucopolysaccharides are complex polysaccharides containing amino sugars. The repeating unit usually consists of N-acetylglucoamine or N-acetylgalactosamine along with a uronic sugar or galactose. Mucopolysaccharides are highly polar and attract water forming a slimy coat. They are therefore useful to the body as a lubricant or as a shock absorber. Due to its role as a lubricant, it is found in Synovial fluid and Vitreous humor of the eye. They are found in the Cerebrospinal fluid as shock absorbers. Mucopolysaccharides are not found in milk, indicated by the fact that milk is not slimy in nature.
