Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disease which is caused due to a gene mutation. A mutated form of haemoglobin distorts the red blood cells into a crescent shape resembling a sickle. This makes them sticky and rigid and prone to getting trapped in small vessels, which blocks blood from reaching different parts of the body. This can cause pain and tissue damage. The sickle cell anaemia causes the body to produce abnormally shaped RBCs.
