Question

In which of the following substances can there be:

(a) increase in mass

(b) decrease in mass

(c) no change in mass

When exposed to air?

(1) Sodium chloride (2) Iron (3) Cone. sulphuric acid (4) Table salt (5) Sodium carbonate crystals

Solution

(a)Increase in mass: Iron(Fe) and conc. Sulphuric acid(H2SO4)

  • Iron and Sulphuric acid when exposed to air, they absorb water vapor from the air because of which their mass increases.

(b)Decrease in mass -: Sodium Carbonate crystals(Na2CO3.10H2O)

  • Sodium Carbonate crystals when exposed to air, they lose water of crystallization from the air because of which their mass decreases.

(c)No change in mass -: Sodium chloride(NaCl) or Table salt(NaCl).

  • Sodium chloride when exposed to air, they do not gain or lose water vapor from the air because of which its mass does not change.
