In which part of the embryo maximum growth take place in hypogeal germination?
Cotyledons are the seed leaves (the very first leaves) that appear from a germinating seed.
The portion of the embryonal axis above the level of cotyledons is known as the epicotyl, and the portion of the embryonal axis above the level of cotyledons is known as the hypocotyl.
During hypogeal germination, the cotyledons along with the hypocotyl remain in the soil and only the epicotyl region emerges out of the soil. In this manner the epicotyl elongates, pushing the plumule upward and they emerge out of the soil and germinate.
Hypocotyl terminates with root tip.
Epicotyl terminates with stem tip.
