Question

In which state of matter does sound travel the
a) Slowest
b) Fastest

Open in App
Solution

  1. A material medium is necessary for the propagation of sound from one place to another.
  2. The medium must be elastic so that its particles may come back to their initial positions after displacement on either side.
  3. The elasticity of solids is more than liquids and gases.
  4. Sound waves travel the fastest in solids, then in liquids, and the slowest in gases.
  5. In a vacuum, there is no medium, so sound waves do not travel in it.

Hence, sound travels fastest in solids and slowest in gases.
