Question

In which wire in an ac housing circuit is the switch introduced to operate the lights?

Solution

Concept Used: Household Electrical Circuits

Step 1: Switches:

  • Switches are introduced in the live wire to switch off an electrical appliance.
  • Switches connect an electrical appliance with the live wire.
  • If an electrical appliance is switched off, there will be no danger of an electric shock.

Step 2: Reason:

  • The mains supply is delivered to our homes using a three-core cable (a thick wire).
  • The cable consists of three wires-live wire (red or brown), a neutral wire (black or light blue), and an earth wire (green or yellow).
  • The live wire (L) is at a high voltage (220 V for the domestic supply) and brings in the current. The neutral wire (N) provides a return path for the current and is kept at zero potential by connecting it to the earth at the power station itself. Thus, the potential difference (voltage) between the live and neutral wires is 220 volts.
  • So, the bulb should connect between these two wires, and a switch is introduced in the live wire.
