The British had separated Bengal in 1905 into the Muslim majority East province and the Hindu majority West province. It was a part of their Divide-and-Rule policy. However, the people of Bengal revolted for the unification of all Bengali-speaking population. Hence, the Brtish finally had to suspend the partition in 1911. This event was the starting point for the demand for linguistic provinces in India.
