In whitewashing of walls, soluble slaked lime [Ca(OH)2] is used. But the product on the walls is insoluble in water. Can you suggest the chemical change which occurs on the walls? Name the type of reaction.
1. In whitewashing walls we use slaked lime[Ca(OH)2] which is soluble in water but after whitewash, the slaked lime reacts with carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere and convert into insoluble calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
Calcium hydroxide Calcium carbonate
2. It will be a permanent chemical change and the wall colour will shine after the formation of calcium carbonate.
3. It is a combination reaction.
