Question

In Young’s double-slit experiment using monochromatic light of wavelength λ, the intensity of light at a point on the screen where path difference is λ, is K units. What is the intensity of light at a point where path difference is λ3?

Solution

Given,
When path difference Δx=λ,
I=K
Phase -difference:
Δϕ=2πλ×Δx
Δϕ=2πλ×λ=2π
Resultant intensity when both sources are monochromatic (I1=I2=I0):
I=4I0cos2(Δϕ2)
K=4I0cos2(2π2)
I0=K4

When path difference Δx=λ3,
Phase -difference:
Δϕ=2πλ×Δx
Δϕ=2πλ×λ3=2π3
Resultant intensity:
I=4I0cos2(Δϕ2)
I=4(K4)cos2(π3)=K4
I=K4
Final Answer : K4.
