Solution

The correct option is C homozygosity

Inbreeding is the mating of closley related animals of same breed. Inbreeding depression is the gradual reduction in the fertility, productivity and weight of the offspring due to continuous inbreeding.

This is caused because of increased homozygosity of detrimental recessive alleles in a continuously inbreeding population. This happens because mating takes place between related animals of the same breed and selecting the superior offspring from the progeny to mate again for 4 - 6 generations within the same population.

The diagram given below shows the accumulation of recessive alleles (aa) in the offspring due to inbreeding. Inbreeding between heterozygous dominant (Aa) individuals of the same population resulted in the production of homozygous recessive (aa) offspring. From the image it is clear that inbreeding depression is caused due to increased homozygosity of the recessive detrimental alleles present in the members of the breeding population. Hence option c is correct.

Introduction of heterozygosity helps to overcome this inbreeding depression. This is because in a heterozygous genotype (having non-identical alleles) the expression of the recessive alleles is masked by dominant alleles. For example, in the above image, a cross between heterozygous dominant (Aa) individual and heterozygous dominant individual (Aa) of another unrelated population resulted in the production of heterozygous dominant (Aa) individual. In this case the effects of recessive allele 'a' is masked by dominant allele 'A'.

Mutations are sudden, heritable changes in the nucleotide sequence of the DNA. These can happen due to errors in DNA replication or exposure to mutagenic factors. It occurs randomly and naturally during the life cycle of an organism.

The phenomenon of inheritance of different genes together and retaining their parental combinations is known as linkage. Strength of linkage between two genes is inversely propotional to the distance between the two.
