Complete combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel gives CO2 and H2O whereas incomplete combustion results in the formation of CO, CO2 and H2O.
Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of air or oxygen is poor. Water is still produced, but carbon monoxide and carbon are also produced in a large amount along with carbon dioxide. The carbon is released as soot.
