Increased carbon dioxide concentration inhibits potassium ion influx into the guard cells, while protons and malate ions combine to form malic acid, which is converted to starch. These changes lead to loss of potassium ions which decreases osmotic potential, which causes exosmosis, lowers turgidity and as a result guard cells become flaccid and stomata are closed.
