covalent characters of halides of sodium increases in order NaF < NaCl < NaBr < NaI . This is because the ionic radii of the halide anions increase on moving down the group. Hence, the polarisability of the iodide ions is maximum. This is followed by the bromide, chloride and lastly by the fluoride ions. Consequently, the covalent character of the halides increases down the group.
