  • Cultural diversity is made up of two words: culture and diversity.
  • Culture refers to the values, beliefs and knowledge of society.
  • Diversity refers to the presence of different elements or characteristics.
  • Hence, cultural diversity is the presence of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
Cultural Diversity in India:
  • Religious diversity: India is a secular country where all religions are given equal treatment and people of all religions live together in harmony.
  • Languages: India is well known for its linguistic diversity. As per Census 2001, there are 122 major languages and 1599 other languages in India.
  • Festivals: People of every religion and community celebrate different festivals based on their cultural identity.
  • For example: Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Uttarayan are celebrated across India on the same day but with different rituals.
  • Food habits: Diversity in food habits is one of India’s treasures. Every region in India offers their own traditional dishes, each of which is unique in their own way.
  • For example: Rajasthan in the West is known for Dal Bati Churma, while Tamil Nadu in the South is famous for its Idli and Sambar.
