Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC): It was established under MoEFCC. It is the apex body to accord notified under Rules 1989. It looks for approval of activities involving large scale use of hazardous microorganisms and recombinants in research and industrial production from the environ-mental angle. The GEAC is also responsible for ap-proval of proposals relating to release of genetically engineered organisms and products into the environment include experimental field trials (Bio-safety Research Level trial-I and II known as BRL-I and BRL-II).
India's apex biotech regulatory committee, the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) functions as a statutory body under the Environment Protection Act 1986 of the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF). It was changed to Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee. The change was effected through a Gazette Notification issued on July 22, 2010 which is now available on the MoEF's website.
