IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. IMO is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. Established in 1948 at Geneva and came into force in 1959.IMO measures cover all aspects of international shipping – including ship design, construction, equipment, manning, operation and disposal – to ensure that this vital sector for remains safe, environmentally sound, energy efficient and secure.
IMO’s original mandate was principally concerned with maritime safety. Today it has assumed responsibility for pollution issues and measures to prevent and control pollution caused by ships.
IMO also plays an important role in the implementation of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea along with the International Whaling Commission, and the International Authority (ISA).
