Solution

  1. On July 14, Indian Railways inaugurated the country's first solar-powered DEMU (diesel electrical multiple units) trains from Delhi's Safdarjung railway station.
  2. These solar panels, which are made under the 'Make in India' initiative, cost Rs54lakh. Solar panels are being employed as a grid in railways for the first time in the world. The train has a battery backup and can run for at least 72hours on battery power.
  3. The solar panels generate about 17units of power in a day which enables the lighting system in the coach.
  4. The railways will save Rs672crore each year by saving an estimated 1.2lakhkilolitres of diesel per year. Solar energy would also help to reduce 2.7lakhtonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
  5. So in my opinion, it is a great initiative by the Indian government as it is saving both money and the environment. In such a world where pollution control and fuel prices are major issues, the introduction of solar panels in railway systems is a great step.
