Question

Indicate the steps in the preparation of KMnO4 from pyrolusite ore.

Open in App
Solution

Potassium permanganate: (KMnO4) can be prepared from pyrolusite (MnO2). The ore is fused with KOH in the presence of either atmospheric oxygen or an oxidisng agent, such as KNO3 or KClO4 to given K2MnO4.

2MnO2+4KOH+O2heat2K2MnO4(green)+2H2O

The green mass can be extracted with water and then oxidised either electrolytically or by passing chlorine/ozone into the solution, electrolytic oxidation

K4MnO42K++MnO24

H2OH++OH

At anode manganate ions are oxidised to permanganate ions:

MnO24(green)MnO4(purple)+e

Oxidation by chlorine:

2K2MnO4+Cl22KMnO4+2KCl

2MnO24+Cl22MnO4+2Cl

Oxidation by ozone:

2K2MnO4+O3+H2O2KMnO4+2KOH+O2

2MnO24+O3+H2O2MnO24+2OH+O2
